The old-school VW Microbus is perhaps one of the most iconic vehicles of all time. Its spaciousness and funky good looks made it incredibly popular during its heyday, but its age makes it quite a rarity in 2024, so many of us will likely never see a running one up close and personal.

Fret not though, because V-Dub has officially resurrected the Bus in the form of the electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz, and orders are already open for shoppers in Kansas City. Read on to discover the key specs and features of this retro-futuristic EV.

ID. Buzz Performance, Range, and Charging

Much like the OG bus, the ID. Buzz’s standard powerplant is situated at the rear, which grants it excellent traction and acceleration. The ID. Buzz also benefits from the low-profile battery pack, which keeps the van’s center of gravity near the ground and helps it stick to the street better than many gas-powered vehicles.

The electric motor is a new permanent magnet synchronous design that’s capable of over 90 percent efficiency in all driving conditions, ensuring no power is wasted. The standard rear-wheel drive ID. Buzz creates an impressive 282 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, and it has an estimated range of 234 miles on a single charge.

For those looking for even more sure-footed performance, the ID. Buzz can be optioned with 4Motion® all-wheel drive. This system adds an electric motor near the front axle and cranks the total output up to 335 horsepower, and the intelligent traction control allows the AWD system to react significantly quicker than mechanical setups.

With 4Motion® all-wheel drive, the ID. Buzz’s range is an estimated 231 miles. Regardless of drivetrain, the battery can be charged at up to 200 kilowatts, allowing it to go from 10% to 80% charged in under half an hour.

The ID. Buzz also packs plenty of power. Rear-wheel drive models can tow up to 2,600 pounds, while the ID. Buzz with 4Motion® tows up to 3,500 pounds.

ID. Buzz Technology

As you’d expect, one of the biggest differences between the ID. Buzz and the Microbus of yore is the fact that the new electric VW Bus is absolutely loaded with tech features.

Other tech features include the 5.3-inch ID. Cockpit, standard wireless phone charging, available head-up display, and available Harmon-Kardon™ 14-speaker audio system.

In addition to all these thrilling tech features, the ID. Buzz comes standard with Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite of driver assistance technology with Travel Assist semi-automated driving.

It comes standard with three rows of seating, and the third-row seats are individually removable. With the rear seats out, maximum cargo capacity jumps up to 145.5 cubic feet. It also has best-in-class legroom in all three rows, and the total passenger volume comes in at an astonishing 163.7 cubic feet.

All rear-wheel drive ID. Buzz models come with a standard second-row bench seat, which allows seating for seven to fit with acres to spare. There’s also an option for second-row captain’s chairs for added versatility.

There are also multiple storage bins and cubbies throughout the cabin, as well as the standard Buzz Box removable center console, which can be moved between the second-row captain’s chairs.

Three available interior color schemes are available, and exclusive to the American market: Moonlight, Dune, and Copper, each with their own distinct vibes that allow you to personalize your ID. Buzz in several ways.

ID. Buzz Exterior

The design team behind the ID. Buzz sought to create a modern-looking van while still paying homage to the unmistakable style of the classic VW Bus. It features tons of retro touches like the giant VW logo and massive wraparound windows, which allow excellent sightlines.

When designing an electric vehicle, it’s pivotal to make it as aerodynamic as possible to ensure the best possible efficiency and range. Luckily, the makers of the original Volkswagen Type 2 Bus followed a similar ethos, which allowed the ID. Buzz to retain a lot of the same design language and style. The new electric VW van has a drag coefficient of just 0.29.

The exterior features include dual sliding doors that allow easy access to both rear rows, as well as power sliding windows and an easy-open tailgate.

Exterior colors for the ID. Buzz include two-tone with Candy White and Deep Black Pearl, Metro Silver, Energetic Orange, Pomelo Yellow, Cabana Blue, Blue Charcoal, Mahi Green, or Indium Gray. It can also be optioned with single-color Candy White, Deep Black Pearl, or Metro Silver.
