If you’re looking for a new Volkswagen SUV, you’ve likely come across the VW Atlas and the VW Atlas Cross Sport. Which one is right as your next Volkswagen vehicle choice? In this helpful guide, we’ll go over the VW Atlas and VW Atlas Cross Sport to help you narrow down your search and pick the right vehicle for your needs. Read on to learn more!

2025 VW Atlas Vs. Atlas Cross Sport: Size

The first noticeable difference between the VW Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport is their difference in size and seating. The Atlas is a 3-row SUV, while the Atlas Cross Sport only has two rows. As such, the Atlas can seat up to seven (7) passengers, and the Atlas Cross Sport tops out at a max of five (5) passengers. Other sizing specs are listed below.

2025 VW Atlas

  • Max cargo space: 96.8 cubic feet
  • Passenger volume: 153.7 cubic feet

2025 VW Atlas Cross Sport

  • Max cargo space: 77.6 cubic feet
  • Passenger volume: 112 cubic feet

For drivers who want a sporty, agile machine without excess space, choose the Atlas Cross Sport. However, for drivers who like larger vehicles or need the space for growing families, the Atlas is the best 3-row SUV for your needs.

2025 VW Atlas Vs. Atlas Cross Sport: Performance

Despite their size differences, both the VW Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport share the same engine, regardless of your chosen trim. The engine for both models is a turbocharged 2.0L, 4-cylinder powerhouse that delivers 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Due to its larger size, the Atlas handles a little differently than its nimbler, smaller sibling, the Atlas Cross Sport.

The entry trims for both models come standard with front-wheel drive and have all-wheel drive as an option; the upper trims of both models come standard with all-wheel drive, so if you want to go off-road, you’ll want to opt for the all-wheel option.

Because both models share the same engine, they both have the same max towing capacity: 5,000 lbs. when properly equipped. For both models, you can expect 20 MPG city / 26 MPG on the highway for front-wheel drive trims and 19 MPG city / 26 MPG highway for all-wheel drive.

2025 VW Atlas Vs. Atlas Cross Sport: Tech and Comfort

Because of the multiple trims of the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, we’ll only be looking at the base trim, the SE, for both models to compare tech and comfort features.

The Atlas comes with Climatronic® three-zone automatic climate control, while the Atlas Cross Sport comes with Climatronic® dual-zone automatic climate control (due to the fact that the Cross Sport does not have a third row). Both models come standard with heated and ventilated front seats, a welcome addition during Kansas City winters. Other shared features include:

  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • A 12” touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless charging
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability
  • And a rear-view camera.

The Atlas comes with six (6) USB-C charging ports, while the Cross Sport comes with four (4). While the base-level SE trim does not have an available sunroof for either model, upper trims of the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport have optional or standard panoramic sunroofs.

2025 VW Atlas Vs. Atlas Cross Sport: Safety
